The Fine Print...Just the Facts

Small Town Spirit: Many volunteers have joined in a new relationship with the city and the schools to form the Williamstown Healthy Lifestyle Partnership. The goal of this partnership is to help Williamstown area citizens of all ages voluntarily improve their access to better health...a higher level of personal physical fitness...through their pursuit of a year-round routine of physical exercise.

Walkable Community: With guidance from local doctors and state advisors, and in cooperation with the city government and the schools, the volunteer Walkable Community Committee will support a year-round program of regular exercise (primarily walking) by individuals and groups in Williamstown. Free year-'round indoor walking is now achievable because on school days, the First Methodist Church is open for walking from 8:30a.m. to 10:00a.m. and designated hallways at Williamstown High School are open from 4:30p.m. to 7:00p.m. Williamstown Area people can show their support for better fitness by joining the '08 community walks (see table):

Specifications of the Pool: The main pool will be outfitted for play, competition, or just soaking. It will be heated, Olympic sized (25 meters long, 6 lanes wide), 3 1/2' deep to 8' deep, with a large "zero-depth" wading area extending off the shallow end. The wading pool will be unheated, 1 1/2' deep, with a flat bottom. Shade structures will provide relief from the sun. The location of the bathhouse concession windows will permit sales to people outside the facility as well as those inside. A kid-thrilling medium height slide will terminate with splash-down in its own section of the main pool. Ample grass, landscaping, and privacy fencing will give the pool a comfortable "green" atmosphere. The high school parking lots will be available most of the season.

Ownership of the Pool: The city will own the pool for clarity of who is responsible, for competence at following state health and safety rules, for demonstrated fiscal responsibility, and for tenured skill and experience with maintenance of pumps and chemicals-handling equipment. The volunteer Pool Operating Committee will hire the pool manager and employees, and will oversee the operations of the pool and content of pool programs...all subject to the approval of the city.

Cost of the Pool: The volunteer Pool Design/Construction Committee has submitted a rough construction cost estimate of $1,629,000. Major features are: lap pool, wading pool, deck, filter building, filtration systems, pool heater ($502,255); bathhouse, sanitary, ($334,500); pool equipment, play feature, water slide, misc. equip., umbrella structures ($213,000); fence, landscaping, storm drainage, water ($101,600); sitework including excavation, general conditions, contingency [10%] ($360,063); A/E fees [7%], bidding, permits and fees ($117,300). Additional costs for land, surveys, bidders' materials, and fundraising are estimated to add $95,000. The play feature will not be authorized, subtracting $25,000. Total cost: approximately $1,699,000.

In-kind Labor and Services: The contract for certain features of the facility, such as the fabrication of the pools and the pool mechanics and piping will be awarded to a highly experienced municipal swimming pool builder. However, the Design/Construction committee currently estimates that at least $315,000 of the cost (up from their original estimate of $215,000) will be met by accepting donations of labor and services in the following categories: bathhouse, sanitary, electric, fence, landscaping, excavation. If you wish to donate your skilled labor or services as a member of the organized pool volunteer construction force during the Spring of '08, please contact Jim Parker (304-375-3717), Chairman of the Design/Construction Committee.

Overall Fundraising Targets: The Fundraising Committee has established the following targets to reach our funding goal of $1,699,000. A new outdoor sign at 5th and Highland will show progress toward the goal.
